VAUGHAN, ON (November 18, 2013) -- The Ontario Soccer Association has announced it will pilot League1 Ontario in 2014 and 2015 as a semi-professional men’s league. The intent behind League1 is to develop a high performance outlet for talented players as an integral “next step” in the Long-Term Player Development pathway. A minimum of eight teams will participate each season in the two-year program.
DG Sports, the operators of the Ontario Soccer League, will oversee the administration and day-to-day operations of League1. The OSA will sanction and provide direct oversight for the new league.
This league will provide athletes with the opportunity to compete in a standards based, high performance environment. Players in the U23 age group will comprise the core group of participants, although this will not be an exclusively U23 league. League1 Ontario also intends to provide ample opportunities to those players who are eligible to represent Canada internationally.
“By piloting League1, we are able to address the needs of even more athletes in our Talented Pathway,” OSA President Ron Smale said. “With the launch of the OPDL in 2014 for the younger age groups, League1 Ontario provides a great complement for athletes graduating from the youth soccer ranks and whose developmental and competitive needs are not currently met. League1 Ontario will also serve as an excellent competitive platform for University and College athletes in CIS, CCAA and NCAA.”
