On July 17th, Lui Amato’s Women's YRSL-S team took off from Pearson airport heading to Italy to take part in an international tournament where they would compete representing Canada, and all of us here at Vaughan Soccer Club. In true Vaughan Azzurri fashion, the team successfully came out top of the tournament having played well and defeated high level competition.
"We played a Serie A women's team Bari FC and another competitive women’s team Real Salernitana" states Lui Amato, Head Coach "In the semi final vs Bari, it was a very strong game and both teams were equally matched. We ended up defeating this semi-pro team with a 3-2 win. Goals scored by Anna Ruggiero(2) and Stephanie Sanders."
Having defeated Bari FC, the Vaughan Vipers Women's squad advanced to the final match, where they were placed against Real Salernitana.
"The win against Bari FC placed our team in the finals of the tournament. We played against Salernitana and won 4-0 , goals scored by Anna Ruggiero, Katerina Kerr, Bianca Granata, and Kaitlyn James. Shut out to Brittany Cranston. Also would like to make special recognition to our Center back Kaitlyn James who walked away being recognized as “Woman of the Match”.
The experience was organized by DiscoverUtravel, a tour company run out of the GTA which promotes education through culture. The team had an experience of a lifetime, visiting multiple places through Italy; Starting in Rome, to Paestum, Pompeii, Salerno, Amalfi, Positano, Sorrento, and Napoli.
"We were able to visit all these beautiful places in Italy, while also being able to compete in a high level tournament. Thank you to Lui for dedicating his time into our team, and bringing us together to travel to Europe to compete. The trip was more then expected. We as a team are exreamly grateful for being allowed this experience and opportunity. We are happy that we were able to make our coach, club, and city proud, representing Canadian soccer, and bringing home a championship gold." says long term player for Coach Amato.
The team returned from Italy on July 30th, bringing home a gold medal, and many memories that they will each hold close to them for years to come. Congratulations to the Vaughan Vipers Women's team, good luck in the rest of your season, and future seasons to come. For more information on this Women's squad, click here to visit their team page.
